Troubleshooting
Make sure to quit ALL programs before installing the CD. This includes VIRUS checking software otherwise you may encounter an "access violation error" where the same file is trying to be used by 2 programs.
Depending on the version of Windows/Software installed, you may be asked to reboot the system during one of the steps described above. If this happens, please follow the steps below:
| Remove the CD. | |
| Reboot the system. | |
| Repeat the installation procedure from step (1). |
CD Handling Tips
CDs should always be held by the edge of the disc.
Avoid touching the surface of the disc at all times.
Do not expose the CD to extreme heat or direct sunlight.
Display Problems
1/ "the search results and the "neighbours" do not columnate correctly on my Desktop PC"
Solution:
Please make sure that you have the COURIER font loaded on your system
Filename: Cour.ttf
This should be in the Windows\Fonts folder
2/ "My CD works OK now that I have downloaded the 'fix', but I still have one
problem that you may be able to advise a better solution for. When I load
the CD only about three quarters of the screen is visible, which means I
can't access the exit or directional buttons. I thought mine was locking
even on a simple search until I discovered there was an exit button! The
only way I have found so far to view the whole screen is to right click the
Desktop before loading the CD and changing the screen settings to 1024x768
(instead of my usual setting of 800x600) but this is sending me crosseyed!"
Solution:
Right click the mouse button on the desktop and then select Properties.
Depending on your system, you will have a Display Properties Window
Windows '95 Screen Shot
Windows '98 Screen Shots

There are 2 possible causes:
a) The screen resolution is not correct. The desktop area should be set to 800 by 600 pixels (see above).
b) The Font size should be set to Small fonts (see above). For Windows 98, click on the "Adavnced" button..
Missing WordPad
The WordPad (free with Windows) word processor is fundamental to the correct operation of the software.
Please make sure that it is loaded in the default location.
For Windows 95/98/ME users, this is normally:
"C:\Program Files\Accessories\wordpad.exe"
For Windows XP/NT/2000 users, use the following patch: Find WordPad (Open the application and click on "Update")
Forcing a Reinstallation of the Program
I would recommend this if all else seems to fail!!:
1/ Deleting the file C:\GL51.INI or C:\GLS51.INI depending on Glam/Glos
2/ Insert the CD & run the setup program again with the defaults
3/ Run the program from the start button
Programs->Glamorgan1851->Glamorgan1851 or
Programs->Gloucestershire1851->Gloucestershire1851
If all this fails, then:
1/ Manually create the folder: C:\Program Files\Glamorgan1851 or C:\Program
Files\Gloucestershire1851
2/ Copy the GL51.EXE / GLS51.EXE fix file into this folder.
3/ Double click on the GL51.EXE / GLS51.EXE file from Windows Explorer.
The other 7 files are not required because they are already on your system,
ref message:
"(File currently on disk was already up to date)"
Creating A Shortcut to GL51.EXE / GLS51.EXE on the Windows Desktop
The most convenient route is:
1/ Find the file GL51.EXE using Windows Explorer (C:\Program Files\Glamorgan1851\GL51.EXE) or (C:\Program Files\Gloucestershire1851\GLS51.EXE)
2/ RIGHT click the mouse on the file name
3/ Select "Copy" from the menu.
4/ Go to your Windows desktop.
5/ Right Click the mouse near (but not on top of) the "My Computer" icon - just
in some empty space.
6/ Click on Paste.
You will now have a shortcut icon to the program on your desktop which is quicker than
using the start menu.
Adding GL51/GLS51 to the Windows Start Button Menu
1/ Click on the Start button
2/ Click on "Settings"
3/ Click on "Taskbar"
4/ Click on "Start Menu Programs"
5/ Click on the "Add" button
6/ Paste the line below into the box for Command Line
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\GLAMORGAN1851\GL51.EXE" (Remember to include the
"")
OR
"C:\PROGRAM
FILES\GLOUCESTERSHIRE1851\GL51.EXE" (Remember to include the "")
7/ Click "Next", "Next" & "Finish"
8/ Select Start button --> Programs and you will see GL51/GLS51 - click on this to run
the program.
Removing the software
Click on Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel.

This screen will appear

1/ Click on "Glamorgan Family History Society 1851 Census" or "Gloucestershire FHS 1851 Census"
2/ Click in Add/Remove
or from Windows Explorer, just delete the folder C:\Program Files\Glamorgan1851 or C:\Program Files\Gloucestershire1851
Important !!!
You must also delete the file C:\GL51.INI or C:\GLS51.INI to completely remove the software.
What is the GL51.INI/GLS51.INI file?
This file is not provided on the distribution CD. The contents of this file are shown below (default)
C:\PROGRAM FILES\GLAMORGAN1851\GL51.EXE
[Glamorgan Family History Society 1851 Census]
[Do not delete this file!]
[Deleting this file will force the installation program to run off the CD]
OR
C:\PROGRAM FILES\GLOUCESTERSHIRE1851\GLS51.EXE
[Gloucestershire Family History Society 1851 Census]
[Do not delete this file!]
[Deleting this file will force the installation program to run off the CD]
The file is created automatically by the software when you run it for the first time.
This file tells the PC that the application has already been setup and does not need setting up each time the CD is inserted.
It would be a pain if the software tried to install itself every time you inserted the CD!.
It also tells the PC where to find the application program GL51.EXE/GLS51.EXE when the CD is inserted, so that the program starts each time.
To fully remove the software, this file needs to be deleted from the PC.
